GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE USE OF PORTABLE SPACE HEATERS
Portable space heaters are devices employed to heat a small, partially enclosed area. The majority of space heaters are powered by electricity and are used when individuals are unsatisfied with the building’s heating system. Unfortunately, space heaters are highly inefficient and pose a serious fire hazard in the workplace when not used properly.
Therefore, it is necessary to establish and maintain guidelines for the use of such appliances.
➡️ HEATERS TO BE “TIP-OVER” PROTECTED & GROUNDED⬅️
➡️WITH 3PRONG TYPE PLUG ONLY⬅️
Heaters must AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF when tipped forward or backward, and have an overheat protection switch. (Tip-over switches should be tested annually by tilting the space heater while it is turned on. If the switch functions properly, the unit will shut off automatically).
Don’t leave a heater unattended.
Unplug when not in use.
- Contact Operations in the event a space heater causes the circuit breaker to trip.
- Do not plug a heater into extension cords or plug strips. It should be plugged into a permanent wall outlet. If a new wall outlet is needed, contact Operations.
- All portable space heaters are to be kept on the floor: not to be placed on tables or chairs
- Keep area clear in front of portable space heaters at least three (3) feet: from papers, magazines, drapes, clothing or office tables & chairs
- Keep heaters clean, NOT covered with dust.
